Question #7 is: If you were starting over again (maybe on a new server perhaps), how would you start building some capital & what goal would you set yourself?
If I were starting over again (from a gold-making perspective) I would probably pick up mining and skinning on my first character and then race to level cap, or at least to the level at which I could max a crafting profession. I would mine and skin while leveling and sell all the ores, gems, and leathers on the AH. I’m pretty sure that mining and skinning would more than cover my leveling expenses and leave me with enough to power level a crafting profession when I hit level cap. I would either choose Leatherworking, because I know it best at the moment, or inscription, enchanting or jewelcrafting, depending on the markets on that particular server. At this point, at least on my server, crafting professions are self-sufficient on the auctions house. By self-sufficient, I mean that there are at least some in-demand crafts where mats are cheaper than crafted items.
I would start with skinning because skinning doesn’t slow leveling down as much as other gathering professions. I would start with mining because I believe that ore and gems are more valuable than herbs, in general. The assumption here is that making gold is much easier at high levels than at lower levels, so leveling quickly is ideal.
If I happened to be starting around a holiday I would use whichever gold making strategy applies to the holiday (something I may write about at another time). I would also pick up a Darkmoon Adventurer’s Guide so I would have a chance at the quest items that drop from dungeon bosses.
My initial goal would be to reach level cap with a few thousand gold. My second goal would be to max a crafting profession. After that, it’s only a matter of time.
